Jeollagamgyeong Provincial Office was in Jeonju for about 500 years during the Joseon period as the local governing authority over the region of Jeolla-do. Jeolla-do during the Joseon period included present Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do, and Jeju-do Island. In the Japanese colonial era, the Jeollabuk-do Provincial Office was established on the site of the Jeollagamyeong Provincial Office.
As the Jeollabuk-do Provincial Office was moved to the new location downtown in 2005, the restoration of the Jeollagamyeong Provincial Office was sincerely discussed. As the leading city in Jeolla-do, Jeonju aimed to restore its historical value and activate the old downtown.
After a long discussion, the old provincial office building was demolished in 2015, and the Jeollagamyeong Provincial Office restoration was started. Restoration Phase 1 was completed in Oct. 2020, and the Jeollagamyeong Provincial Office was opened to the public.
