Engraving the memories of the day Experience rubber shoes art at Yeon atlier

Yeon Atelier is located at the Jeonju Crafts Exhibition Hall. This place is leading rubber shoes art by creating a story of rubber shoes containing Korea's long history and culture. Let's listen to a lecture on the history of traditional rubber shoes by Kang Yeon-sook at Yeon Atelier and make your own rubber shoes, the only one in the world.

Yeon atlier

If you paint rubber shoes with sincerity, the black rubber shoes will be transformed into pretty shoes. Works designed by the artist are displayed on the wall of the workshop. The interior of the workshop is filled with the artist's sense, which stands out.

When you enter the workshop, the experience begins with the introduction of the author. I was nervous because I was not good at drawing, but I feel more comfortable with the encouragement of the artist saying that it becomes a work no matter how I draw poorly because the painting can be expressed in various ways.
First, let's choose the size of the rubber shoes we want. Fix the colored cloth on the back of the rubber shoes with a red thread. Make three knots with your heart wishing for a desperate wish you want to achieve. Colored cloth means long life without illness, and red thread means umbilical cord. Hold the long thread and cut the red thread like cutting the umbilical cord. The first step is completed! If I had a child, I would smile as I recall the touching memories of cutting the umbilical cord.

While making rubber shoes, writers and students exchange interesting anecdotes about rubber shoes. Listening to the story, I was impressed by the rubber shoes that have long traditions and cultures. Of course, it was a more enjoyable experience thanks to the writer who was generous with praise. If you diligently move your hands and decorate them, black rubber shoes will be reborn as colorful and cute flower shoes.

The process of beautifully changing the black and rough rubber shoes, such as the phrase "rubber shoes, old things are gone, but newly created values" on one side of the Yeon Atelier wall, makes me think a lot. Yeon Atelier's rubber shoes art experience, which depicts the past, present, and future wishes, is a really unique experience.

The beginning of the experience is to decide what to make. You don't have to worry that you don't know anything about traditional knotting. The writer will recommend the one that best suits your level. The easiest thing is a knot bracelet. I chose this because the flower-shaped knot was so pretty and then, I heard the explanation from the artist.

I challenged with confidence, but I was surprised to hear that it sometimes takes more than two hours to make a bean-sized knot in the ring. Therefore, the artist prepares in advance the parts that take a lot of time or are difficult to make. You can choose the thread of your favorite color and follow the artist's demonstration. At the beginning, I wondered, "How can this line become a pretty flower?" But as I followed the explanation, the shape gradually begins to take shape.

It can be made without difficulty because the artist teaches you how to make it easily and how to repair the parts that are lacking. It's a secret that I untied all the knots and revuilt it since the size of the petals was incorrectly set. I took a picture with a proud heart holding a finished flower knot. Even if your hands are slow or clumsy, the artist kindly explains and waits for you, so don't hesitate to experience the beauty of traditional crafts.

Blossom of thousand years Look around the highest governing body of the Joseon Dynasty

This time, stop by Jeolla Gamyeong and feel the coolness of the open space. The recently restored Jeolla Gamyeong was the government office in charge of Jeolla-do and Jeju-do. Jeolla Gamyeong, which was the heart of Jeolla-do, never moved, unlike Chungcheong Gamyeong and Gyeongsang Gamyeong. It is said that Jeolla Gamyeong was the second largest after Pyongyang Gamyeong, so its power must have been different. Sitting on the spacious wooden floor of Seonhwadang Hall opens up the tired mind of the stuffy daily life.

Jeolla Gamyeong

In Jeolla Gamyeong, you can hear meaningful stories about Seonhwadang Hall and Gwanpunggak through regular commentary tours (free pay) with cultural tourism commentators at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. every day. Shall we walk through Jeolla Gamyeong and listen to the stories of the past?

Jeolla Gamyeong
Go to Jeolla Gamyeong, the center of Honam

At the entrance of Jeolla Gamyeong, a monument showing what Jeolla-do was like in Korea is engraved. General Lee Soon-shin wrote the word, “若無湖南 是無國家” on the Janggye, which was raised to the king after moving to Hansando Island. The word means “Jeolla-do is a fence of the country. Therefore, there is no country without Jeolla-do.” If you pass through the inner gate and go inside, you can see Seonhwadang Hall with a hipped-and-gabled roof. It is a building that was used as an office by the Jeolla auditor. Seonhwadang Hall means "to carry out enlightenment in accordance with the royal order." This place was the heart of Jeolla Gamyeong and the dispatch office of the government. The auditor performed administrative, judicial, and military duties here. In front of Seonhwadang Hall, there is a Gaseok on the left (east) under the island stone, and a Pyeseok on the right (west). Gaseok is a stone that makes sinners repent of their wrongdoing, and Pyeseok is a stone that served as a newspaper box for the people to complain of injustice. I stood in front of the Pyeseok standing as a stone pillar on the right side of the road. Standing in front of this stone, an official comes down from Seonhwadang Hall and listens to unfair stories, making me want to confess. The rain gauge in front of Seonhwadang Hall shows the aspect of Jeolla Gamyeong as an administrative agency. Since the amount of rain falling in Jeolla-do determined the annual living conditions of the country, recording precipitation was very important as the leader of the region.

Jeolla Gamyeong

Jeolla Gamyeong did not refer to a specific building. Dozens of buildings built around Seonhwadang Hall, including Guesthouse, Gwanpungru, Maewoldang, Cheongyeondang, and Jinnamru, were Jeolla Gamyeong and Joseon's ruling system. It was the center of Honam, a symbolic place with Gyeonggijeon where the portrait of King Taejo is located, the grave dedicated to the ancestral tablets of progentor, and Jeonju history archives where the royal seal was kept. The fact that there was a Jeonbuk Provincial Government building and a police station in this place also shows its meaning.

Meet the Seonhwadang Hall in digital, the heart of Jeolla Gamyoung

In the room on the right side of Seonhwadang Hall, the old image of Jeolla Gamyeong, which was restored based on historical research at the Jeonju Museum of History, is presented with digital images and the voice of actors. The actor's voice in the middle of the night is realistic and the faces of the soldiers are humorous. Inside Seonhwadang Hall, once “Wearing konryongpo experience," "Making fans experience," and "Jeonju Hanji Letter Writing Event." were held. Living quarters are a house where the family of the dispatch office lived and are located in the north of Seonhwadang Hall. If you go inside, there are interactive books and VR where you can experience the history and architectural style of the 1,000-year history of Jeolla Gamyeong. The interactive book is a digital implementation of , a work diary of Jeolla Audit. When you turn the page, the content changes, and when you point at the picture with your finger, the auditor walks to the officials and makes them work. It gave life to the person in the record. VR was made possible by imagining Gamyoung's daily life with a joystick, but it is regrettable that it was closed due to COVID-19 quarantine problems.

  • Jeolla Gamyeong
  • Jeolla Gamyeong

Behind living quarters stands a painting tree that says to defeat evil spirits. For 200 years, the tree hung white flowers every summer and watched what happened in Jeolla Gamyeong. On a sunny day, I will walk as the dispatch officer couple under the branches of the flower tree. If you go to the west square, it is a Windowscape experience space. Windowscape is a machine that detects the movement of the body and explains it according to motion, introducing the roles of Tongincheong, Seonjacheong, and Inchulbang in an order where audit assistants stayed. Tongincheong is the place that was in charge of calling and making reservations, and it is said that Tongincheong organized Jeonju Daesaeup-nori. Seonjacheong is a workshop of a craftsman who makes Hapjukseon, and you can see the craftsman moving on the screen with the explanation that it is a place where the craftsman made a fan to pay to the king with high-quality Korean paper made by a branch. The Inchulbang was in charge of printing, and there was a craftsman who made good paper. It shows the tradition of Jeonju, where there were many people who liked stories and distributed lot of copies.

Walking Jeolla Gamyoung under the moonlight

A moonlight walk takes place at 7 p.m. every evening. Under the moonlit tile roof, I walked the path that Jeolla dispatch officer walked. To feel the special feeling of walking in Jeolla Gamyeong under the moonlight, I recommend you to take a rest in Jeonju for one night. In the middle of the night, Seonhwadang Hall is like a time machine going back to the past. Inside it, a scene of Jeolla-do auditor greeting visitors is unfolded in a digital video screen. The feast on the screen welcomes guests, followed by the scenery of Jeolla Gamyeong in the 19th century. The illuminated pine tree reveals its magnificent appearance and the hanok roof reveals its antique beauty. The moonlit night air has a subtle scent of pine trees.

Jeolla Gamyeong

After leaving Jeolla Gamyeong, I walk toward Jeonjucheon Stream. The "Good Road to Walk," which was built to the intersection of Wansangyo Bridge, will be in full bloom over the riverside in May. Jeolla Gamyeong was a strong pillar supporting Joseon in the 500th year. It's a night when I look back on whether I've been a great support to someone.

An art playground of infinite imagination! From a teaching art to experienced art, Palbok art factory

Sun Electronics factory, which was making cassette tapes, was transformed into a Palbok art factory. The neglected factory is newly created by the power of art and culture. It creates values that put all the generations together. Art becomes a play and an education here. Let's enjoy the relaxation at the Palbok Art Factory in return for your busyness.

Palbok art factory

Sit on a railroad bench in front of the main gate of the Palbok Art Factory and let my imagination runs away. Originally, the Palbok Art Factory was a Sun Electronics factory that made cassette tapes. At that time, men and women who came from rural areas commuted along the railroad track carrying industrial products. They left to relieve the heavy shoulders of the household. Whenever they missed their hometown, they would have endured nostalgia by looking at the flower of the Yipop tree that was blooming on the railroad. Although it was a factory area on all sides, the beautiful tree trees along the railroad make you calm down.
Palbok Art Factory is divided into section A and section B. The lobby at section A is an archive exhibition space for the cassette tape of Sun Electronics factory. The name, Sunny is symbolic. I met a huge Sunny sculpture inside the cafe. The size of it seems to contain the weight of the lives of numerous Sunnies who worked at the Sun Electronics factory. Looking at the various art spaces of the Palbok Art Factory, the prejudice of the desolate factory disappears.

Dreaming Arts Center

There are many things to see in each building that has been renovated from an old factory. Whenever you look up at the sky and buildings, works of art appear beyond your imagination. At that time, you can hear the subtle and clear bell chimes with the gentle wind. There is a beautiful scenery made of waste electricity hanging from the signboard called Dream Art Site. Waste gas canisters hang out of the sky like cucumbers. The subtle and clear spreading sound calms the mind. Artists would have put their heart and soul into creating a bell chime that makes such a beautiful sound. Because it took a long time to make the bell chime, the sound of scenery lingers for a while.

Where anyone play freely and spread their imagination, It becomes an art playground. The section A and B of Palbok Art Factory are connected by containers and stairs. A wizard appeared under the container passage. I looked at the wizard for a moment and imitates Harry Potter hoping that the wizard make my wishes come true. It seems like the whole world will turn out as imagined, stirring the wand and turning away the spell, "Wingardium Leviosa", like Harry Potter. Everything that happened in life turns into art beyond the generation, as the child sees it, and as Sunny sees it in the 80s and 90s. Busy daily lives make me tired, but I think that busy daily lives gather to make me better. Sunny's kitchen outdoor shield seems like a pinwheel floating in the sky in contrast to its color. I meet the childhood version of myself at the art center of the dream center. This is the moment when art becomes a life. It is recommended to make a reservation for the children's art playground, which is open permanently on weekends.

Ypop Tree Picture Book Library

Climbing the container stairs, you go to the two-story Ipop Tree Picture Book Library, which has a pretty name. In spring, the name was brought from the street tree of the Yipop tree on the railroad that blooms the Yipop flowers. Libraries are often misunderstood as heavy and hard atmosphere. Perhaps, if you have taken the test at least once, it is a misunderstanding from the pressure of books.

Ypop Tree Picture Book Library

As its name suggests, the Ypop Tree Picture Book Library is a place where picture books covering generations are displayed. It introduces books that are good for adults to read from infants. Our picture books are translated into world languages, so you can meet the original and translated versions in various languages. You can also find books containing Korean emotions and picture books by local artists. It is a space of communication where the whole family can enjoy books recognized for their artistic value. It is a library where the pressure from books or libraries has disappeared. Pop-up books that show paintings in three dimensions bring the book to an artistic level. It will be an opportunity to develop humanities knowledge by touching and playing books.

As the sun slowly sets, the sculptural light bulbs installed on the roof of the Ypop Tree Picture Book Library glisten all at once. The sculpture looks like a cloud or a tree. Any shape is the answer. This is the moment when all prejudices and misunderstandings are healed through books. I am grateful that the closed factory building has been reborn as an art space like this.

A scholar experience with children, Jeonju Children’s Museum

If you are looking for a place to go out with your children on the weekend, how about Children's Museum of Jeonju National Museum? Here, you can learn Jeonju's spiritual culture through indoor play.
The Children's Museum is a cultural space where you can experience the life of a scholar and the history and culture of Jeonju. After parking in a large free parking lot and going along the road, children's museum signs as well as Oseong and Hanum to the left of the Jeonju National Museum will show you the direction. Oseong and Haneum are different names for Lee Hang-bok and Lee Deok-hyung, administrators of the Joseon Dynasty. In the garden in front of the Children's Museum, there are stone pagodas, sotdae, and well that welcome guests. Since it's a place where old ancestors made their wishes carefully, why not make a wish with the child?

Children’s Museum

In the garden, some children are playing on the backs of rabbits. The giggling laughter is full of joy. A large giraffe is pushing its head deep into the building, wondering inside the children's museum. When I entered the lobby, the giraffe blinked its big eyes looking at a child reading a book on one side of the library.

In the center of the lobby, a large tree with cogwheels extends to the third floor. Colorful butterflies hang from each branch. The children are eager to spin the gears. It is because everything seems interesting to children. It's a paradise of curiosity and imagination. The eyes of children waiting for entrance are full of excitement.

As much as you sweat, it remains in your heart

In spring, the world is covered with fine dust. Every parents afraid to take their children out not only because of fine dust but also because of pollen. At times like this, why don't we let children play freely indoor of the Children's Museum? The left room on the third floor is where infants and toddlers under the age of 7 play a scholar game. It already stands out from a standpoint. At the corner of “Stylish Hanbyeokdang”, children can draw pictures with paper fans and colored pencils like scholars. Each child holds his or her favorite colored pencils and draws pictures. It's a picture that only children can understand, so let's not ask why you drew it like that, let's just ask what you drew.

Children’s Museum

There is also an 8-pane folding screen puzzle of Chochungdo Island drawn by Shin Saimdang. The children clatter for a long time with their small hands to put the puzzle together. Next to the slide is a screen waterfall with light pouring out. To ride the slide, children can use the stairs or a rock wall made of nets. It is cute to see the child running hard without knowing that his socks were coming off.

At the corner of "Protect Jeonju Castle," children build castles with block bricks. They learn themselves that only when they cooperate with each other they can make a nice castle. Children are playing magnet fishing and archery. The sweat of playing will leave so much in their heart. Through play, they can experience various activities to learn the spirit of the scholar.

Children learn how to enlighten the world through play.

On the right side of the third floor, children can try living as a scholar. As they change into hanbok, they turn into a scholar and a lady of the Joseon Dynasty. If you go into the room where old village school teacher is presented, you can meet the "Hunjangnim KKuldanji" through the video where children can learn to write at the old village school. Children tap traditional instruments such as drums and janggu at “Pungryu Hanmadang.”
They also learn table education, the way parents taught their children in the past. There is also a kitchen where you can help your parents set a table when a customer comes to your house. A child putting soup and side dishes on the table and asks to eat together makes me smile.

Children’s Museum

After studying and eating, now let’s go to take a examination with a traveler’s knapsack. Through the video, you can hear various stories on your way to Hanyang (previous name of Seoul) to take the test. While filling out the application form directly at the test site, a camera on the desk takes a picture of the face and attaches it to the application form. You can also see the children sitting on a chair and solving problems on a large screen. Then, we will ride a horse to compete in martial arts. It is a game where you throw the sandbag in the basket on the side of the horse toward the target while riding.

Now that you've taken the examination, let's put on Eosahwa hat and get on top of the flower kiln. Children becomes a secret inspector who benefits the world and catches the corrupt officials who bully the people. If a bad officers appears on a large screen, you can catch it by stepping on a pad on the floor. Children learn how to brighten the world by while playing. The long journey to be a scholar tells us that Jeonju's scholar spirit is not easy to achieve.
