A Restful Urban Space Reviving the Life of an Old Reservoir
Osongje Ecological Park is a restored ecological park created from Osongje, which was originally an agricultural reservoir built in the 1930s. The name “Osong” comes from the five pine trees that once stood around the reservoir. Reeds, cattails, and water lilies bloom across the water, while wildlife such as otters and egrets inhabit the surrounding walking paths. Even within the city, this is a space where the cycle of nature remains alive, changing its colors with each season. The water surface spans approximately 110,000 square meters, where reeds, cattails, and water lilies blend harmoniously. Around it, alder tree groves and walking trails extend throughout the area. In spring, canola flowers and cherry blossoms bloom together; in summer, lush greenery reflects a refreshing sky on the lake. In autumn, foliage and silver grass surround the water, making it one of Jeonju’s representative ecological attractions where nature can be enjoyed all year round.
A Healing Space Where City and Ecology Coexist
The circular trail around Osongje is about 2 km long and gently connects to the foothills of Geonji Mountain. With wooden decks, observation platforms, and rest areas throughout, it is an easy and pleasant walk for visitors of all ages. In the morning, mist rises over the water, creating a mystical atmosphere, while at sunset, photographers gather as the lake reflects warm hues of dusk. The alder tree groves play an important role as a “natural air purifier,” reducing fine dust and releasing oxygen. The park is also home to diverse wildlife, including carp, crucian carp, and mallards, adding to its ecological value. Blending water and forest close to the city, Osongje offers one of the most peaceful spaces for walking and relaxation for the people of Jeonju.
