Hanbyeokdang, the 8 scenic views of Jeonju
If you walk along Jeonjucheon from Hanok Village, you will find Hanbyeokdang not far away.
Hanbyeokdang is Jeollabuk-do Tangible Cultural Property No. 15 and is a pavilion built by Woldang Choi Dam,
the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, by cutting the cliff at the foot of Seungamsan Mountain as a villa.
Hanbyeokdang, which is called the Samhan(three Hans) of Honam along with Gwanghallu Pavilion in Namwon and
Hanpungnu in Muju, is counted as one of Jeonju's 8 Scenic Views because of the
beautiful harmony between the lofty pavilion and the scenery.
A lofty posture guarding the top of the cliff
Passing the Hanbyeok Bridge and heading to the place where Jeonjucheon Stream bends, you will see Hanbyeokdang through the thick trees on the cliff of Seungamsan Mountain. The appearance of the lofty pavilion guarding the top of the cliff opens one's mouth and makes you think once again how important the taste for the arts for the ancestors was. What a passion to build a pavilion by carving out a cliff to enjoy the beautiful scenery! Thanks to the efforts of our ancestors in the past, we are now able to enjoy such a wonderful spectacle.
Looking down at Jeonjucheon Stream from the bridge, the reflection of Hanbyeokdang in the water is clear. The move is full of anticipation. I hurried my steps, wondering how beautiful the scenery looking down from the top of Hanbyeokdang would be. One step at a time, climbing the stone steps gets busy.
Jeonjucheon Stream seen from the pavilion
As you climb the stone steps, you will see a welcome signboard at Hanbyeokdang. Encouraging my pounding heart, taking off my shoes and entering Hanbyeokdang, my eyes are filled with greenery. The thick trees at the foot of Seungamsan shaded the waters of Jeonjucheon Stream in green. I approached the railing and looked down at the Jeonjucheon Stream. Hanbyeokdang was given the name ‘Hanbyeokdang’ because the clear water flows under the pavilion all year round, and the water that collides with the rocks and scatters like white jade is cold. Unfortunately, there were no waves and the water was calm.
The scenery of Hanbyeokdang in Jeonju is so beautiful now, and I wonder how much more beautiful it must have been in the old days, when poets constantly came to write poetry and enjoy the wind. How about visiting Hanbyeokdang, which is beautiful in all four seasons, befitting the reputation of Jeonju's 8 scenic spots?
