2026 Jeonbuk Arts Center Children’s Theater “Monster Encyclopedia”
The fantasy puppet play “Monster Encyclopedia,” which invites children into a mysterious world of monsters, is coming to the stage.This production brings to life legendary creatures from the folklore of Korea, India, Japan, China, and other Asian countries, offering both imaginative adventure and the charm of traditional puppet theater.
The story begins when the “Myeongsin Guests,” mysterious beings said to spread smallpox among children, arrive in Joseon.The mischievous protagonist “Oneuri” treats an important ritual as a joke and suddenly falls into the world of monsters.To safely return home, Oneuri must embark on a special journey to find “Cheolhyeon,” the youngest sibling of the Myeongsin Guests.
The performance is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional Korean puppet theater style known as “Deolmi.”Various forms of puppets—including full-body puppets, mask puppets, and table puppets—appear on stage, creating vivid scenes that feel truly alive.
Combined with mystical music and imaginative stage direction, the production stimulates children’s imagination and deepens their immersion in the story.The frightening yet charming monster characters and adventurous storyline entertain young audiences while also delivering messages of courage and personal growth.
