Gijije Reservoir is located in Yeoui-dong, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju. Originally created to supply agricultural water, the area has been transformed alongside the development of Jeonbuk Innovation City and the Manseong district into a waterfront walking trail and ecological park. The Gijije walking trail project began in February 2018, and today it is loved by both citizens and visitors as a circular walking path where nature coexists with the city. At sunset, the calm water turns crimson with reflected light, and after dark, the illuminated deck path creates a beautiful nightscape.

From Agricultural Reservoir to Jeonju’s Signature Walking Trail

Gijije is a large reservoir built in 1934 to provide agricultural water. As Jeonbuk Innovation City and the Manseong district developed into new urban areas, its role evolved—from a water supply source to a vital ecological axis of the city. In response, Jeonju City developed walking paths and an ecological park. As the original paths were disconnected, a new circular trail was created to allow visitors to walk around the entire reservoir.

The newly developed trail includes a 1.16 km floating deck section out of a total 1.79 km route, allowing visitors to walk above the water and enjoy the scenery. It also features a 603 m earthen path and a 24 m bridge. Along the trail, visitors encounter Manseongnu Pavilion standing gracefully above the water. The name “Manseongnu” reflects both the district name and the meaning “where all things prosper.” Sitting quietly at the pavilion, one may feel as though time has paused—or that it gently flows with the wind.

A Healing Walk Where Nature and City Coexist

The reflection of clouds and neatly aligned buildings on the lake creates a landscape where nature and city harmoniously coexist. Walking along the floating deck that connects the trail and embankment reveals the city’s thoughtful design. Gentle slopes ensure safe access for all, including the elderly, children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. Lighting installations enhance safety at night while also adding color to the evening scenery. Efforts have also been made to preserve the habitat of local flora and fauna by placing the trail away from the central ecological zone, and natural wood materials were used to blend with the surrounding environment.

In addition to the circular trail, a cross-lake walkway has been completed within Gijije. Of its total 637 m length, a 420 m section with heavy foot traffic has been widened for comfort. This route connects Jeonbuk Innovation City and the Manseong district, shortening travel distance for students and residents. Surrounded by wetlands rich in greenery and a contrasting city skyline, the Gijije Circular Walking Trail offers a scenic waterfront landscape that is healing simply to behold.
