‘Regular Performance at Subokcheong’
At the ‘Subokcheong’ in Gyeonggijeon, Jeonju’s representative cultural heritage,the exhilarating melodies
and laughter of the audience do not stop every weekend. Subokcheong was a place where high-ranking
officials in charge of ancestral rites at Gyeonggijeon in the past used to reside temporarily to prepare for the event.
Currently, it is a resting place where you can take a break with culture in a quiet atmosphere, and offers visitors
to Gyeonggijeon an unexpected gift-like performance where they can meet the delightful stories
and exciting Korean music heard with traditional Korean instruments.
Traditional Changgeuk with modern colors
Storytellers in unusual make-up begin to appear one by one, and the audience sends dazzling eyes. Conversations with the audience naturally create a comfortable atmosphere, and the performance begins in earnest. Storytellers use Subokcheong in various ways, collecting only the witty and delightful passages of Chunhyangga, Heungboga, and Simcheongga among the five Madang(episodes) of Pansori and weaving them together into one-act Changgeuk story.
Changgeuk is so diverse in composition that it is called a comprehensive art that mixes music, theater, dance, costume, and entertainment. The regular performance at Subokcheong, a one-act Changgeuk, presents Jeonju's uniquely specialized traditional Changgeuk reinterpreted with a new and unique modern sensibility, and the audience responds more enthusiastically as it intimately captures the beauty and value of the old traditional culture.
The charm of performing with the audience
Since the popular Madang(episodes) of Pansori, Chunhyangjeon, Heungbojeon, and Simcheongjeon are performed as a witty one-act Changgeuk, the ‘Regular Performance at Subokchang’ is more comfortable and more focused on audiences of various ages. You can enjoy the performance for free by paying only the entrance fee for Geonggijeon.
This one-act Changgeuk, featuring a light and exciting Chang(song part of Pansori) and storyteller's acting, fills Gyeonggijeon with laughter and humor. In the middle of the performance, there will be an exciting surprise event in which prizes are provided according to participation, maximizing vitality and creating unique and warm memories in the atmosphere created by the storyteller and the audience.
