Nambok and Chabok – Jeonju
Based on a traditional folktale,Nambok and Chabok is a heartwarming story that conveys the meaning of fortune, life, and sharing.
Long ago, deep in the mountains,Nambok lived diligently by gathering firewood.No matter how much wood he collected, however,he was bound by a strange fate—he could only ever see “three bundles.”
One day, while hiding among the firewood to catch a thief,a goblin appears before him and reveals that his fortune is already predetermined.
Feeling sympathy for Nambok,the goblin asks a higher power for help,and discovers a way—Nambok may borrow the fortune of someone not yet born.
However, there is one condition:he must use that fortune to do good deedsand eventually return it in the future.
Nambok agrees and borrows the fortune of an unborn person named “Chabok.”
Though he does not become extremely wealthy,he shares what he has, helps others,and continues to live a life of kindness and virtue.
One day, a poor couple caught in the rain comes to him and gives birth to a child.Grateful for Nambok’s kindness,they name their child “Chabok.”
