Jeonju is mostly known as the 'city of flavors'. Therefore, travelers visiting Jeonju primarily enjoy food and leisure activities. However, Jeonju is also a city that is very suitable for various activities, not just delicious food. In particular, there are many low mountains around Jeonju, making it great for light trekking for about 1 to 2 hours. When I was young, the breakfast I had after hiking the nearby mountain with friends every Sunday was truly delightful. I would like to actively recommend this experience to tourists visiting Jeonju as well. If you come to Jeonju, you should definitely visit places like Girinbong, Geonjisan, Wansanchilbong, and Namgohsanseong. In this trekking course, I would like to introduce Namgosa, located at Namgohsanseong.
TIPAfter a light hike, it would be nice to stop by Nambu Market near Hanok Village for a meal before returning to the accommodation.
When visiting Jeonju, spending a night in Hanok Village is highly recommended. You can experience the peaceful and serene charm of a traditional hanok, something you cannot find in a modern city. Waking up early in the morning and taking a walk through Hanok Village is also a great idea. In the early hours, when there are almost no tourists, you can enjoy a quiet and tranquil view of Jeonju’s hanok scenery, which will bring relaxation to both your eyes and mind. Let's start trekking while fully experiencing the traditional atmosphere of Jeonju.
2
Cheongyeonru, a traditional place of elegance flowing over the Namcheon River
940-2 Dongseohak-dong, Wansan-gu, Jeonju
If you step a little away from Hanok Village, you will find Jeonjucheon River, and on it stands Cheongyeonru, which preserves the unique and elegant wooden architectural style of Hanok. With its tiled roof and delicate wooden pillars in harmony, it is located in a position overlooking the Namcheon River, making it a beautiful spot that is popular for photography both day and night.
3
Namgosa, a tranquil resting place steeped in history
53-88, Namgosanseong 1-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si
Jeonju built fortifications in the past to defend against enemy invasions, establishing castles at key points in the east, west, south, and north to station troops. Among them, to the south is Namgosanseong, and nearby is Namgosa. In spring, Namgosa is beautiful with blooming flowers, and in autumn, it is famous for its stunning autumn foliage, making it a great place to visit in any season. It also offers an excellent view overlooking the city of Jeonju.
4
Nambu Market, where old charm and youthful sensibility coexist
19-3, Pungnammun 1-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si
Nambu Market has long been a representative local market in Jeonju. Cozy shops line the narrow alleys, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere where visitors can experience the kindness of local merchants. It is also close to Hanok Village, making it a popular spot for tourists. In particular, it is a great place to enjoy a budget-friendly meal, offering Jeonju’s signature dishes such as bean sprout soup, blood sausage (pisundae), pork trotters (jokbal), and Jeonju bibimbap.
5
Hyeondaeeok, which tastes even better when eaten in the morning
63, Pungnammun 2-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si
When it comes to representative dishes of Jeonju, Jeonju bibimbap and Jeonju bean sprout soup cannot be overlooked. In particular, bean sprout soup is best enjoyed in the morning. After a night of enjoying Jeonju, a spoonful of the broth made with squid stock, crunchy bean sprouts, and spicy peppers can provide a refreshing feeling that seems to wash away fatigue. In Jeonju, you can find delicious bean sprout soup almost anywhere without disappointment. However, finding a restaurant that opens early in the morning can be challenging. If you're looking for a hearty breakfast, 'Hyeondaeeok' in Nambu Market is highly recommended.
