A Confucian School Preserving the Educational Spirit of Joseon
Located on the eastern side of Jeonju Hanok Village, Jeonju Hyanggyo Confucian School is a traditional educational institution established in the late Goryeo period and continued through the Joseon Dynasty to the present day. It is currently designated as a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Jeonbuk State. The site preserves its original layout, including Daeseongjeon Hall, which enshrines the tablet of Confucius, and Myeongnyundang Hall, where scholars studied. These structures represent the essence of Confucian school architecture from the Joseon period. The tiled roofs, red entrance gate, and courtyard embraced by ancient trees convey the spirit of traditional learning even within the city. Its proximity to Jeonju Hanok Village has also made it a popular filming location for K-dramas, films, and variety shows, representing the refined beauty of Jeonju.
The Beauty of Time Flowing Through the Four Seasons
Jeonju Hyanggyo reveals a different atmosphere in each season. In spring, yellow cornelian cherry blossoms brighten the courtyard, attracting photographers. In summer, vibrant crape myrtle flowers bloom along the walls, creating a picturesque scene. In autumn, ginkgo trees form golden tunnels under soft sunlight, reaching the peak of serene beauty. This landscape, where the four seasons gently linger, offers quiet comfort to visitors. Sitting on the wooden floor and spending time between the breeze and sunlight, visitors can feel a subtle connection between the scholars of the past and present-day Jeonju. Jeonju Hyanggyo is more than a historical site; it is a cultural space where the time and spirit of Jeonju remain intact.
